1 hurt in car-semi crash

WATERLOO | A Cedar Falls man was taken to the hospital after his vehicle and a semi collided Friday morning.

Walter Offner, 49, of 2207 Thunder Ridge Blvd., was transported to Allen Hospital by paramedics after his Chrysler Town Country van became wedged under the semi’s trailer. Crews with Waterloo Fire Rescue had to extricate him.

The accident happened about 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 218 and Broadway Street, according to Waterloo police. Police said Offner’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The semi, driven by Munir Shaba of Skokie, Ill., was crossing Broadway on the ramp coming off of U.S. 218 when it collided with Offner’s van, heading east on Broadway. Police said Shaba was cited for a red light violation.
