LOLO – One person has died and several others were taken to the hospital after a Saturday evening crash on U.S. Highway 93 South between Lolo and Florence.

Details are limited, but we’re told there were two vehicles involved, and they crashed head-on just after 5:30 p.m. near Trader Brothers.

Law enforcement officials tell us that several people were taken to both Missoula hospitals to be treatmed, but there’s no word yet on their conditions.

The crash forced authorities to close down the four-lane highway as crews worked to clear the vehicles from the scene.

The Montana Highway Patrol is still looking into what caused the accident.

(UPDATE, Sunday morning) Icy roads are being blamed for triggering a head-on crash that killed two people on U.S. Highway 93 south of Lolo on Saturday.

Authorities say a 23-year-old woman diving a pick-up truck headed south lost control, crossed the center line, and crashed head-on into a northbound SUV at around 5:30 p.m. near Trader Brothers.

The 23-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene while a nine-year-old girl in the SUV was later pronounced dead at Community Medical Center.

A male passenger in the pickup truck was taken to St. Patrick Hospital, as the woman driving the SUV – as well as a six-year-old in that vehicle – were also taken to the hospital.

The Montana Highway Patrol reports that alcohol was not a factor in crash, but speed and road conditions were.

The names of those killed in the accident have not yet been released.
