At least one person has died in a three-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 near Williamsport, according to Maryland State Police Lt. Michael Fluharty.

All northbound lanes are closed at this time, and northbound traffic is being detoured off the highway at Md. 68, police said in a news release.

Police are urging motorists to avoid this area, including U.S. 11 and other local roads. Traffic on U.S. 11 in Williamsport was heavy at 1:45 p.m.

The crash occurred at 11:23 a.m. near the Bowman Development plaza in the area of the 1-mile marker, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

Two of the vehicles were badly burned, including a white Ford pickup truck with heavy front-end damage. The second vehicle was identified by police as a Jeep Liberty.

The third vehicle, a Chevrolet Blazer, was off the interstate between two pine trees.

A second accident involving two vehicles on southbound I-81 was slowing traffic on that side of the interstate.
