Friend recounts last moments before Louisville pilot killed in crash

BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – The pilot who was killed when his plane crashed into a field near Hardinsburg on Saturday has been identified as 54-year-old Donald Klein Jr. of Louisville.

Klein’s mother told WAVE 3 she is ”deeply in shock.” She said, “I am almost not able to bear it. We know we must go on. We will miss him.” Of her only son, Klein’s mother said, “flying was his life.”

WAVE 3 also spoke with a friend of Klein’s who saw him just a few hours before the crash. Jordan Klunk said Klein began the day on Saturday by having breakfast with other friends at the Rough River airport.

Klunk said Klein had electrical issues with his plane and got a ride back to Louisville where he changed his plane’s battery.

“Me and one other gentleman in one airplane flew down to Rough River,” said Klunk. “As soon as we took off out of Rough River, probably two or three minutes after Don took off, he had called us on the radio. He said, ‘Hey are you guys on the radio?’ I said, ‘Yeah, we are.’ And he said, ‘I’m going down in a field.’ It was kind of a shocker to me. Everything seemed fine. That was his

Woman injured in Timmerman crash

By :TERRY SMITH

A 54-year-old California woman was treated and released at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center after being injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash at Timmerman Junction south of Bellevue.

The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office this morning identified the victim as Delane Funk, of Alturas, Calif. Sheriff’s Capt. Curtis Miller said Funk was transported to the hospital complaining of “minor body pain.”

The accident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m.  Miller said Funk, driving a green 2000 Honda CRV, was eastbound on U.S. Highway 20. Investigation showed that she stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded across the intersection where her vehicle was struck by a green and white 1997 Ford F250 driven by Bruce Thacker, 51, of Jerome. Thacker was northbound on state Highway 75.

Miller said no citations had been issued but that the accident remained under investigation.

The number of serious accident injuries has declined at Timmerman Junction since the Idaho Transportation Department implemented a lower speed limit last year on H-75 in the vicinity of the intersection.

Jamieson says police have impounded both vehicles and are investigating how the tire broke off the Humvee.
