Crash on Blue Route causes traffic headaches for Philly commuters

PHILADELPHIA Authorities say a multi-vehicle crash involving a box truck closed all lanes of I-476 north near Philadelphia Thursday, causing traffic to backup on all highways heading into the city.

The pileup shortly after 5 a.m. on the highway known locally as the Blue Route occurred near the off-ramp to Route 3 in Delaware County. All northbound traffic on I-476 was forced to exit at the Route 1 Springfield exit.

Television news helicopter footage showed a box truck on its side atop a car with other vehicles apparently involved as well. The specific cause of the crash and whether or not there are any injuries was not known Thursday morning.

Police said at least one person was taken to a hospital.

Traffic was able to begin moving past the scene of the accident after several hours and the accident was fully cleared around 8:15 a.m., according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

Accidents were reported on other roadways, and the Pennsylvania transportation department was warning motorists to use caution due to icy conditions.
