Hanover crash kills 1

A man has died after a crash between a vehicle and a tractor-trailer on Route 2 in Hanover on Friday afternoon.

Arland Burgess, 58, of Mexico, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Maine west on Route 2 when his vehicle came up on a section of road that was very slushy and lost control, Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant said. The Chevrolet spun around and entered the opposite lane into the path of an eastbound tractor-trailer.

Burgess may have died on impact in the crash, which was reported at at 3:40 p.m., Gallant said. He was the only person in the vehicle.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, David  Abbott, 29, of West Paris, not injured, Gallant said. He was driving a truck owned by Coffin Trucking Company  of West Paris.

State police are at the crash scene, with two sheriff’s deputies doing a reconstruction, Gallant said. A state trooper who does mapping is also headed to Hanover.

Route 2 remains closed from Hanover village to the Newry town line. Traffic is being rerouted to Intervale Road in Bethel, Gallant said.

Smaller vehicle are being allowed to detour on Davis Road.
