Man injured in motorcycle crash identified

Twenty-seven year-old Justin Velez of Fayetteville was traveling north on U.S. 17 when he crashed his motorcycle into the back of a car near the U.S. 74-76 split in Leland, Trooper T.D. Wheeler said Sunday.

Velez was alert and conscious when Wheeler arrived at the crash Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, Wheeler said.

None of those injuries was life threatening.

Wheeler said the couple and two children in the car Velez struck were not injured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, but speed was a likely factor, Wheeler said. Velez was traveling between 90 and 100 miles per hour at the peak of his ride before hitting the vehicle, Wheeler said.

Velez, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was cited for reckless driving, Wheeler said.
