A massive multi-vehicle pileup caused havoc on Highway 1 west of Golden on Tuesday night.
Around 11:30 p.m. Golden RCMP received a call reporting a crash at the top of Heather Hill, about 50 kilometres from town. While police were en route, reports came in about more vehicles becoming involved in the collision.
When police, B.C. Ambulance Service and Parks Canada personnel arrived, they found a crash involving a total of nine tractor-trailer units, three personal vehicles, a pickup pulling a trailer and a rental vehicle pulling a trailer. Some vehicle occupants suffered minor injuries and were treated in hospitals in Golden and Revelstoke.
The collision had started with a westbound commercial tractor-trailer unit that jackknifed on the snowy road and blocked the highway. As other vehicles came upon the scene, some were unable to stop and ran into each other.
RCMP continue to investigate. For updates on road conditions and closures, visit drivebc.ca.
