One person was killed and two others were injured Tuesday morning in a head-on collision on Route 1 near Smyrna, Delaware State Police said.

Investigators identified the deceased woman as 78-year-old Brigitte Best, a Berlin, Md., resident who was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima on northbound Route 1 when her car veered off the highway, according to Cpl. John Day, a DSP spokesman.

“She lost control of the vehicle on the wet and snowy roadway, and it traveled in a northwestwardly direction across the grass median and into the southbound lanes, where it collided with the 2002 Ford Express,” Day explained.

Best died at the crash scene, police said.

The van was being driven by Leonardo Cruz, 25, of Elkton, Md. Rene Vazquez, 42, also of Elkton, was the front-seat passenger.

Ambulances took Cruz and Vazquez to Christiana Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police added.

All three people involved in the head-on crash were “properly restrained” by their seat belts, police reported.

Emergency workers closed that section of southbound Route 1 for approximately three hours after the crash, allowing time to clear the scene and conduct an accident reconstruction, according to police.
