Route 1 near Smyrna reopened after fatal crash

One person is dead and two injured after a head-on collision on southbound Route 1 near Smyrna Tuesday morning.

Delaware State Police report the 78-year old driver of a Nissan Altima lost control of her vehicle at about 11am. The car skidded on the wet roadway and across the grass median, and into the southbound traffic lanes, where it was hit by a Ford Express van. State police declared the driver of the Altima dead on scene.

Route 1 southbound was closed for three hours as state police investigated the crash. Those lanes are now reopened, though police say they are still investigating the crash. No charges have been filed.

The two passengers of the van were taken to Christiana Hospital. Both reportedly have non life-threatening injuries.
