1 airlifted in 3-car crash

A Key West woman was airlifted to Miami Sunday evening after a three-car crash at Mile Marker 15 that slowed traffic both ways on U.S. 1 for about three hours.

The condition of Kathleen Garvey, 55, was unknown as of press time, but no fatalities had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kathleen McKinney.

Garvey was headed south in a 1998 Ford at 5:47 p.m. when she tried to pass a 1994 Toyota driven by Christobal Roca, 55, of Miami, in a no-passing zone, sideswiping it, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

Roca’s Toyota spun out of control and Garvey’s Ford then struck, head-on, a northbound 2001 Toyota driven by Mark Jachelski, 19, of Summerland Key.

Garvey was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, where she remained as of Tuesday, McKinney said. A message left with a hospital spokeswoman for information on Garvey’s condition was not returned by press deadlines.

Roca and a passenger in Jachelski’s Toyota, Daniel Harper, 19, also of Summerland Key, were both taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island, where they were treated and released, hospital spokesman Randy Detrick said.

Multiple fatalities after serious crash near U.S. border

SURREY, B.C. — Five people are dead following what B.C. Mounties say is possibly the worst car crash witnessed in over 20 years.

Police say the crash occurred at an intersection not far from the U.S. border Sunday morning.

Sergeant Dale Carr said it appears that a Dodge Caravan sped through a red light at the intersection and then crashed into a mid-sized car.

“ 1/8The Dodge Caravan 3/8 has such high velocity, it goes through the intersection, it comes to rest about 200 metres west of that intersection,” he said. “There’s again, so much velocity involved in the crash that the mid-sized import vehicle was torn in half at the firewall.”

Carr said the incident left a debris field of about 200 metres in size. All five occupants — three adults and two children — of the mid-sized car died at the scene. The male driver — and lone occupant — of the Dodge Caravan suffered serious injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Royal Columbian Hospital.

Carr, who has been in law enforcement for 26 years, called the crash scene a horrific scene of debris, and the worst collision he has witnessed.

State police said three drivers cited for following too closely

Image 2A six-car pileup occurred during rush hour in East Marlborough Township on April 10, state police from the Avondale barracks reported Thursday.

The accident happened at 7:52 a.m. as the drivers were all traveling north on U.S. 1, south of Bayard Road, and three of the six vehicles were following too closely, creating a domino effect of crashes, police said. Angelique M. Raezer, 51, of Kennett Square; Tob Tucker, 42, of Fallston, Md.; and Tim L. Martone, 44, of Nottingham, were all cited for following too closely. Police said all six drivers were wearing seatbelts, and none were injured. Three vehicles sustained damage that required towing; the others could be driven from the scene, police said.

A two-vehicle crash without injuries involving teen drivers occurred Saturday at Hillendale and Bayard Roads in Kennett Township, state police said. According to police, a 2001 Honda CRV driven by a 17-year-old male from Newark, De., was traveling south on Bayard Road and entered the intersection with Bayard Road prematurely. Police said he struck the front bumper of a 2009 Jeep Commander driven by a 16-year-old female from Chadds Ford

Gary Pearson, 53, was riding north on U.S. 1 at 7:38 a.m. on his Johnny Pags 300 Raptor when Michael J. Diedel, 20, of Palm Coast pulled onto the road from Matanzas Woods Parkway in front of the Jacksonville man, said Trooper R.S. Tipton.

Pearson’s helmet could be seen lodged by the car’s left front wheel.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, Tipton said.

It is unknown whether Pearson was in the area for Bike Week but the trooper said that information would likely be available by the time the investigation is complete.

Diedel was uninjured. His passengers, James J. Habersham, 20, and Raymond Torres, 23, were also uninjured, according to an FHP report.

“It’s still under investigation why the Firebird pulled out in front of (Pearson),” Tipton said. “The motorcyclist wasn’t doing anything wrong and was wearing his helmet.”

Force India simmers over ‘lost fairytale’

At one point in Sao Paulo on Sunday it looked like there could be a famous first-time victory for Force India, after Nico Hulkenberg led for 30 of the 71 laps of the 2012 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix.

But the first safety car deployment for debris on the Interlagos track closed up the field and wiped out the lead that Hulkenberg and second-place driver Jenson Button had over the rest of the field; and then a subsequent drive-thru penalty for Hulkenberg for causing a collision with Lewis Hamilton also angered the team.

“For a while it looked like we were heading for a fairlytale result with Nico leading for so much of the race and showing his skill in the tricky conditions,” said Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley. “We had a great car today and had the pace to win, but it was not meant to be.”

Fernley expressed his doubts about whether the first safety car on lap 22 was really called for.

“I would question the deployment of the first safety car, which we believe could have been covered under waved yellows,” he said, later telling reporters
