Updated: Del. 1 re-opened after serious vehicle crash north of Smyrna

SMYRNA – A 78-year-old Maryland woman died Tuesday after a head-on collision on Del. 1, approximately two miles north of Smyrna, police said.

Brigitte Best, of Berlin, lost control of a 2008 Nissan Altima she was driving northbound on a wet and snowy roadway at approximately 10:48 a.m., police said, and it traveled in a northwestwardly direction across the grass median and into the southbound lanes, where it collided with a 2002 Ford Express van.

Leonardo Cruz, 25, and Rene Vasquez, both of Elkton, Md., were in the van that was stuck, and were transported to Christian Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Ms. Best was pronounced dead at the scene.

Del. 1 southbound was closed for approximately three hours as the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated and cleared the crash. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed, the DSP said.
