Wrong-way crash on 290 leaves 1 man dead, 4 A&M students hospitalized

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A wrong-way driver is dead and four Texas AM students were hospitalized after a two-vehicle accident early Sunday in northwest Harris County, deputies said.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Jon Fontana was driving a silver Toyota Camry heading east in the westbound lanes on U.S. Highway 290 near the Grand Parkway around 2:30 a.m. The Camry then collided head-on with a blue Jeep Liberty carrying the four students, who were on their way to College Station.

Denise Martin has been identified as the driver of the Jeep with Scott Baumgarten, Sarah Lemay and Franklin Kingsley as her passengers, deputies said.

The four college students, all in their early 20s, were transported to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in stable condition.

Fontana died at the scene of the accident, deputies said.

The accident comes on the one-year anniversary of another fatal head-on collision involving Texas AM students that happened on the same section of Highway 290.
